Meet the Doniphan Ward Bishopric

Profile on the new leaders

Norma King, Media Director (Rush Creek Ward)

Jon Miller, Bishop

Childhood & Spouse

My wife and I met at Jordan High School in Sandy, UT. We were friends first and spent a lot of time together in group dates, though never officially as a couple back then. We were later married in the Salt Lake Temple.

Mission

I served in the West Virginia Charleston Mission beginning in 1994. It was great preparation for understanding Midwest vernacular and culture.

Education & Employment

I work for a data analytics company and moved to the Liberty area the very week COVID shut everything down, when the office I relocated to immediately went fully remote. As a result, I’ve never actually been to that office. My assigned office is now in Lehi, UT, and I work remotely, traveling back to Utah several times a year for work and family.

Children

We have four boys. Our oldest was married in August to a wonderful young woman we absolutely adore. He recently completed his first semester at George Washington Law School in Washington DC. Our next-oldest works here in Missouri in network operations for a regional internet provider. Our second-youngest recently returned from the Mexico City East Mission and will be working in Alaska beginning in May before returning to school. At the request of the branch presidency, he recently moved his records to the Spanish Branch. Our youngest is currently a senior at Liberty North High School.

Experience That Shaped Your Testimony

Watching my wife serve as a Relief Society president deeply strengthened my testimony. Seeing the Christlike love, concern, and service she showed others helped me better understand how the Savior loves each of His brothers and sisters. I often try to follow her example.

Hobbies

I enjoy running, playing soccer, spending time with my wife, and crafting.

Life-changing Experiences

Travel has given me a broader perspective and a deeper appreciation for how beautiful the earth truly is. However, the experiences that have shaped me the most are getting married and becoming a parent. When your focus shifts from “me” to “us,” it changes both your secular and spiritual outlook in meaningful ways.

Favorite Calling

Nursery—by far. I served as a Nursery leader in my previous ward for eight years. I love working with kids. I even brought my tarantulas to Nursery for lessons on animals and during Halloween. The kids were hesitant at first, but quickly became fascinated. Moms were usually cautious too—until they ended up holding them. The dads, on the other hand, generally kept their distance

Ways to Focus on the Savior

Maintaining an eternal perspective helps me remember that everyone is dealing with challenges and struggles. Some people are just better at hiding them than others.

Counsel or Encouragement for Your Ward

We truly have a great ward. I would encourage everyone to extend more grace than you think is necessary and strive to be friends—not just friendly.

Jerry Andersen, First Counselor

Childhood & Spouse

Jenni and I met in Midland, TX. We are the oldest siblings in families with five and eight children, respectively. I was born in Provo, UT while my parents were attending BYU. My family lived in California and Idaho before moving to Middleton, where I graduated from high school. I learned to work on the small farm Dad bought in Idaho, moving sprinkler pipe and bucking bales of hay. I later worked at the local IGA grocery store in Middleton.

Jenni and I met while caroling with a youth group shortly after I returned home from my mission. The rest is history. We jokingly say that I married Jenni for her money, and Jenni married me for my good looks—and we both were disappointed. We were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on  December 29, 1987.

Mission

I served my mission from October 1984 through October 1986 in the Missouri Independence Mission. It was a LOT bigger geographically then! I was one of the last persons called to serve an 18-month mission, but was given the opportunity to extend to 24 months.

Education & Employment

I went to Rick’s College (now BYU-Idaho) for a year. After we were married in December of 1987 I transferred to BYU, where I pursued bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Management Accounting. We had our first two children while in school.

After graduating I was able to get a job with Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) in Boston, MA, as a Certified Public Accountant. I’ve worked with several finance/accounting companies over the years. We’ve lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Utah, Washington, Colorado and now Missouri.

Children

We  are the parents of six children (Mallory, Makayla, Megan, Kerrilyn, Camile, and Seth). We have five daughters who were followed by our son. In essence, our son had six moms growing up! Our four oldest daughters are married, and we have 11 grandchildren to date. Seth lives with us and Kerrilyn and Devon (and their two boys) live in our basement apartment. In fun, they call us the “overlords” and we call them the “bottom dwellers”. Camille purchased a house in Liberty and is still nearby.  We have 11 grandchildren and it is the amazing experience others told us it would be.

Experience That Shaped Your Testimony

One of my “northern stars” has been my identical twin brother, Kerry. Although Kerry passed away within 20 days of birth due to heart defects, I know he has served as a ministering angel throughout my life. Kerry was mentioned specifically in my patriarchal blessing given to me by my grandfather, Victor Bingham. In that blessing, I was told that Kerry was “kept” by Heavenly Father and is engaged in preparing himself for his eternal life. He also stated that knowing we can be reunited on the other side of the veil would serve as a strength to me during difficult times. On several occasions, I have felt his presence as important life events have taken place, including my baptism, ordination to the priesthood, missionary farewell, etc.

Hobbies

I love to read. I especially love to spend time reading and pondering the scriptures and studying the words of the living prophets. I also love spending time with family. If you know me, you know I have a loud, outgoing personality which can be a bit alarming for children between the ages of one and two years old. As a result, I have been called “Uncle Scary” and “Grandpa Scary.” After kids turn two, they generally warm up to me and my bubbling personality!

I also love collecting knives. During 2025 I got into purchasing and selling knives online as part of my hobby. It was a fun distraction during a difficult year.

Favorite Calling

I love any calling that involves teaching—especially working with the youth. In the past, I served four times as Scoutmaster, multiple times in Young Men presidencies or as advisor, and as Sunday School and Primary teachers.

About eight years ago, I was called to teach seminary three weeks after having had triple-bypass surgery. Our special needs son, Seth, was a senior and participant in the class. It was a difficult year preparing for seminary each morning, but the relationships I built with those seniors and the revelatory process of preparing lessons each day deeply increased my conversion and fueled my love of spending time daily in the scriptures.

Ways to Focus on the Savior

Keeping an eternal perspective while “not looking beyond the mark” is critical. Remembering that what we get in the hereafter depends on what we are here after has been a mantra I adopted while serving my mission that has always “stuck.” Studying the lives of the prophets (past and current) helps me stay grounded and provides me with strength to deal with the challenges that arise. Elder Holland once said, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” We grow the most when we are stretched.

Zack Edwards, Second Counselor

Childhood & Spouse

Caylee and I were married almost five years ago. We joined two families. Caylee and I met at the Mid-Singles Institute class and through that created a start to a wonderful relationship two weeks before COVID provoked the shutdown. We had a long-distance relationship from five  miles away.

Mission

I served my mission in the Nevada Las Vegas Mission and served from the border of California in Arizona to halfway up Nevada, among the tumbleweeds.

Education & Employment

I went to school for Programming, which led me to Architecture, which led me to Construction Management with a minor in Business. Due to two recessions I found myself unemployed and headed north to Alaska. There I was director over all of the Alaska Fish and Game properties, mostly around construction—from hatcheries to business offices, and from the metropolis of Alaska to the deep bush.

Children

My biological kids are Abigail, Ethan, Stratton, and Anne, and Caylee’s biological kids are Alana and Lucia Stern.

Experience That Shaped Your Testimony

I have had three open-heart surgeries–one before my mission. During my mission I was told three times I needed to have corrective surgery right away; each time I asked for another six months, and the doctors relented. The day I left the mission I met my parents in Seattle and was rushed to the hospital. I was checked out by the doctor who had received all my scans and he looked at me and then my parents and said, “He looks great. That valve has at least seven more years on it.” My last surgery was due to a bacteria attacking my valve months before COVID, and God blessed the hands of the rookie surgeon who operated on me. The surgery went great and I am doing fine right now. I run every morning before the sun comes up.

Hobbies

Some would say I am a workaholic, but I would say I love what I do. I have been running my business creating educational games for the past 12 years. I was creating physical games, but when I started seeing the issues with programs like Roblox and what they are doing to our kids I had to act. Now I develop educational video games that will change the world for millions of kids. So, that is what I do in my spare time. My wife will lovingly tell someone who asks me what I do in my spare time, “What spare time?” And I have fun with helping kids, now more than ever with this new calling.

Favorite Calling

I used to be a Young Men’s president back in the early 2000’s and must say that was my favorite calling. Working with the Young Men was so great, back when there was Scouts.  Now with the new changes, I know that our bishopric is trying to help the Young Men look into the future.

Ways to Focus on the Savior

I am known in church for always writing notes in my journal and carrying it everywhere. When I struggle or have hard times, I write. I have a journal full of every verse I read in the Come Follow Me lessons. I turn to those notes and write and lose myself, out of the world, and into the words of the scriptures. Or, I spend time with my family. Though sometimes kids can be frustrating, spending time with them and serving others helps you lose yourself and your concerns.

Counsel or Encouragement for Your Ward

I love our Bishop–he is a great man whom I have always admired. We also share the same fascination with quirky socks. However, when I found out Bishop Wright would become Ben Wright again, I was a little sad because he was so great for my kids. Bishop Miller, in my eyes, is just as perfect for the youth of our ward and up for the task. I will support him in any way I can. And Jerry Anderson has been my President of the Sunday School (I was his second counselor) and I very much admire him as well for his spiritual strength and love and understanding of the gospel. I will work hard to keep up with them.
