“I learned a lot on my mission; not just about the Gospel but myself and the world around me. There is nothing quite like sharing what you believe in a foreign land and language. The mission provided me with the essential catalyst needed for growth in all aspects of life, not just spiritual. It is a testament of Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness. Missions prepare young men and women to live righteous and temple-worthy lives.”

“Being humble and charity and love were very important things on my mission. When you’re humble, in the mission, you will learn a lot. I had to be humble and lean on the Lord, that was the moment I saw the most growth in my mission. I started listening more, praying more and asking what I could do better. I relied on the Lord and that is when I grew and had the most fun time in my mission.”

President Brian and Kim Hancock

Brasil Goiânia Mission

President Brian and Kim Hancock returned from serving as mission president leaders in the Brasil Goiânia Mission. The Hancocks said they learned a lot in their three years of service.

“I learned a lot of things on our mission, but I think one of the most important is that we need to build each other up,” Kim Hancock said. “No matter what others say or do, we are to be Christ-like.”

She also spoke about becoming a true disciple. One way she said others could do this was by wearing their temple garments.

“Wear your temple garments day and night,” she said. “Take no breaks, no vacations from your garments. They represent Jesus Christ.”

President Hancock advised those who were considering a mission.

“If you’re thinking of going on a mission, get ‘Preach My Gospel’ and read it every day,” President Hancock said.

He spoke about retirement and the best way to spend it.

“Satan is a liar and lies everyday. Don’t listen to the lie. Satan lies and says money is the most important thing. It’s not. He’ll lie and say ‘you’re old, you should take it easy.’ Taking it easy is not part of God’s plan. Serve a mission instead. If you lose your life, you will find it.”

Texas Dallas South Mission

Nathan & Katrina MacDonald served as office missionaries in the Texas Dallas South Mission.

“Oftentimes the things that we’re worried about at home are the very things that the Lord will help us with when we turn to serve him,” Nathan MacDonald said.

The MacDonalds said that after their youngest left the nest, they knew they wanted to start planning on a mission, but they were surprised at the Lord’s call.

“We were in the middle of building a house, we had just become empty-nesters. We thought we needed more time, but the Lord told us to go now,” Katrina MacDonald said.  “He’s asked us to do hard things in the past that are not convenient or didn’t make sense. So we knew that we could trust Him. You go forth in faith knowing the Lord has it in control. The Lord‘s ways are not our ways. If the Lord says to go, it’s okay. We went forward and were blessed.”

Both Nathan and Katrina agreed missions help stretch you and put you out of your comfort zone.

“I think that’s the beauty of serving a mission is that it gives you the ability to grow closer to the Lord and to understand him and have more faith and trust in him in a different way than you have from just being here,” Katrina MacDonald said.
