New Bishopric in Hodge Park Ward
Matthew Nielsen called to serve

Lori Garcia, Stake Communications Director (Hodge Park Ward)

A new bishopric was called on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the Hodge Park Ward in the Liberty Missouri Stake. Matthew Nielsen was called as bishop with Jim Hastings as first counselor and James VonGunten as second counselor.
During the meeting, Bishop Nielsen testified of the Savior, Jesus Christ and His love for all of us.
“As I was called, what has been impressed upon my heart is love,” Bishop Nielsen said, tears trickling down both cheeks. “God is love. At-oneness unites us. My hope is to unify us and extend the Savior’s love, as we are all in need of it.”
He said that through the call he first felt inadequate, but has been reminded that if he turns to the Savior, he will be able to do this work. He also set out his mission to help the rising generation.
“Youth, Primary children and YSA, you are my highest priority,” the new bishop said. “I want to help you all feel the Savior’s love.”
Bishop Nielsen’s wife, Amber, echoed her husband’s love of the Savior and his concern for all of his children.
“Miracles large and small help you see the love of Jesus Christ,” Amber Nielsen said. “I want to help others see those miracles.”
Bishop Brody Perschon was released after several years of service. Now President Perschon, he serves as the second counselor in the stake presidency. President Perschon told the youth of his love for them.
“It has been such an honor to serve you and get to see His children the way He sees them, especially the love Heavenly Father has for the youth.” President Perschon said. “Youth, you’re important, you’re loved and you’re needed.”
Stake President Matthew Russell ended that portion of the sacrament meeting testifying of Bishop Nielsen’s and his counselors’ call as the new bishopric.
“They are called of God,” President Russell said. “I testify the will of God will be accomplished. Jesus Christ leads this church today.”
