What is a trial in your life that became a blessing in some way?

Mary Ames, Reporter (Rush Creek Ward)

In the question “What is a trial in your life that became a blessing in some way?” I don’t think that trials become blessings. I believe trials create opportunities for blessings. Bad things are bad things but how we react to them is what creates possibility for change and growth and blessings. Prayer was comfort to me, I had many spiritual experiences too beautiful to voice that helped me remember the gift of courage and strength I had been given. What trials of circumstance left of me I gave to Heavenly Father who taught me how to mold and rebuild into a stronger version of myself.
Through trials we learn about ourselves as Heavenly Father learns of us. He put us here to see what we would do when He is not physically present and through the trials we face He sees our true hearts. Turn to Him and He will open our eyes to the blessings of heavenly gifts and love of others that will help us through the trials of circumstance.

I am 90% deaf in my left ear. I have been since I was 6 years old. My ability to hear sounds and voices required me to actively focus and be present during conversations and communication. While it has not been easy to appreciate my hearing loss, I learned that my weakness can be turned into a strength if I count it a blessing. I learned to listen with intent and as a result became an audio learner. Intentional listening allows me to connect with others and my Savior in ways that bring me closer to them and Him.

I’ve had many trials in life, big and small. Whether that’s cancer as a teenager and continuing to suffer its effects throughout my life. Living thousands of miles away from the support of family members and feeling alone and isolated. Not being able to have biological children, adopting children who struggle with mental health. Learning how to deal with situations where you feel your trust has been betrayed, or trying to teach children who chose to live without the gospel, or have been “stabbed in the back” as you’ve tried to grow your career.
These trials, along with many others, have brought different blessings in my life. From being able to have empathy with others going through health issues, the joys that come from raising children, to having great friends in the gospel to rely on, to learning to treat others as you would want to be treated and loving and accepting all of God’s children. But, I believe if I was to share what the greatest blessing has been it would be how each trial has required that I rely on the Lord, that I’ve had to turn to Him to help make sense of it. The questions we often ask ourselves of, why me? Why now? What am I to learn from this? have all been asked at different times for sure, but my reliance, even dependence on the Lord for his help has blessed me with a greater capacity of faith to face all my trials, including those I continue to deal with today. The strength of my relationship with the Savior is my greatest blessing.

There are so many instances throughout a life that can be categorized in this way. God works with such patient and intricate timing as he teaches and shapes us to become better than we could have imagined. When Stephen and I were experiencing loss and infertility before our fourth child was born, I remember the frustration and upset that I would cycle through every single month. I also remember the calm, the personal revelation and the lessons that I learned along the way. That waiting period has made me a more empathetic person with a stronger and deeper testimony. I’m able to relate to a majority of women and families who experience similar things and I’ve grown better for it. There are some days that I wish no one had to go through difficult trials but I also know that Heavenly Father doesn’t want us to stay the same, He wants us to grow, learn and prepare ourselves to be like Him and like Jesus Christ!

If you could have a member of the 12 apostles (living or dead) for dinner, who would you pick and why?
